PM, Mian Nawaz Sharif Disqualified & Resigned over Panama Verdict by SC

Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified this morning by Five Judges Bench in Supreme Court of Pakistan in Panama Papers Case revealing that Mr. Sharif’s three children owned offshore companies and assets which was not shown already on his family’s wealth statement. The verdict was given unanimously by all five judges in the bench which made it a unique and historic decision.

Later, Mian Nawaz Sharif also steps down as Prime Minister of Pakistan after Supreme Court disqualification verdict. A spokesman for Mian Nawaz Sharif’s office said in a press statement “Following the verdict, Nawaz Sharif has resigned from his responsibilities as prime minister”.

The decision of SC brings Nawaz Sharif’s third term in power to an unexpected and early end. Nawaz Sharif has also lost the chance to be the first Prime Minister of Pakistan to complete his first full five-year term.

Media showed lot of people assembling outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad this morning to celebrate the verdict. Opposition supporters came out into streets, chanting slogans and distributing sweets.

It is unclear right now who will be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan but Mian Shehbaz Sharif, his brother and Chief Minister of Punjab province is a strong candidate to succeed Mr. Sharif.
